QUILTY365

I'm making flowers for Quilty365.

I'll pick fabrics based on what made me happy or what I'm thankful for each day.

Each flower will represent a week.

The centre was originally to be a circle applique
but I wanted to have some variety, ie not all fabric.

I tried a tatted* motif and like the way it brought the petals together.

So all flowers will have tatted centres.

It doesn't take long to tat these, so I think it's do-able.

(*Tatting is a method of making lace by hand using a shuttle and thread.)

I started on December 1 and here's my week:

I'm using a whole piece of cloth as the base fabric.

This saves me from having to cut background squares
so I can concentrate on needle-turn applique for the flowers.

There is two-and-a-half yards of this men's shirting fabric.

I had intended to make a shirt dress out of this but never got around to it.

Can't wait to fill it up with happy flowers!

PATCHWORK PURSES

Recently, a friend asked me to make
a patchwork purse for her birthday.

I was pleasantly surprised!

She had said before that
patchwork is too old fashioned for her  :-)

This friend and I often get together to bake and have tea.

So I fussy cut the lining to reflect our friendship!

Fabric used was a sweet combination of
gingham, dots, stripes and floral fabrics.

Added the ribbon tab as music is an important part of her life

The recessed zip and bias binding were hand-sewn.

I prefer the look of recessed zips --- it's neater.

On the practical side, the sharp end of the zipper pull is hidden
and less likely to scratch other stuff in the bag.

(Yes, that's how my mobile phone got its scratches.)

Hand-quilted.

The larger purse is 16 x 13.5cm, the smaller is 10.5 x 9cm.
Both have a 1cm gusset.

These purses and this pretty pendant I made were gifted yesterday.

Read about the pendant here.

SCRAPPY BLOCKS

These 8.5 inch square blocks were made after
I saw a poster asking for scrappy block donations.

They're stitched using pattern instructions
 from the charity drive organiser.

These 35 blocks will make one quilt.

The organiser aims to gift one quilt to
each of the 15 residents at a care home
as Christmas presents.

I'm glad to be part of a sewing community that
uses its skills/resources to benefit others.

TINY PATCHWORK

This is the tiniest patchwork quilt I've ever made.

Each block is 1cm by 1.5cm.

The patchwork may be Liliputian but it took the whole day to finish.

Spent some time fussing over the combination of fabric, as always :-).

And this is hand-sewn. It was fiddly.

I told myself the crooked patchwork created the cosy, homely feel
I wanted in this piece of work.

Ha ha.

The girl, pillow and bed were embroidered.
There wasn't much to do but it ate up the hours.

I had to take frequent breaks.
My eyes were strained from sewing this on a grey day
with a lot of rain and little light.

This work was inspired by a book,
whose title I translate as “Cute Little Embroidery”.

Left: Embroidery in the book
Right: Book cover, ISBN: 978-986-6348-73-0

As you can see from above pix, the author meant
the whole thing to be embroidered.

But I just fancied doing a teeny, tiny, little patchwork quilt instead.

What am I going to do with this piece? I don't know.

I do think it's cute so it'll go into safekeeping.

Maybe use it in the patchwork quilt I want to make for myself one day.
